I’m still recovering (on my third cup of tea) from the whirlwind that was the first London Screenwriter’s Festival; but it was well, well worth it. The venue was brilliant, the delegates were lovely, the speakers and panellists were incredibly generous with their time, only bettered by the volunteers and staff who helped the event to come off, in my opinion, with all the success it deserved.

Well done to Chris Jones, David Chamberlain, (and Julian, Judy, Anton, all the Olli(e)s, Gemma, Mike, Meena, Phoebe, Lucy and everyone else who has been working not just over the weekend but in the weeks and months prior) to make it look as easy as it did!

So the eagle-eyed amongst you may notice some price changes – which reflect a few things:

1/ Although I am focussing on my own projects, I am still taking the odd service or two, so if you are interested do let me know – alexandriahorton@gmail.com

2/ The prices/discount on my Services page have been amended, in line with the amount of effort required. My launch prices were at a very low price in order to encourage you folk to try me out; however, if a service requires several hours of careful consideration (which they do without exception), I hope you’ll agree that it should be reflected as such. Of course, they are all still extremely good value for money, and fear not, for the bargain hunters amongst you – there will be promotional discounts again in the near future!

Calling all multiplatform writers…

I’m hoping that I’ve not been away too long, as it’s been time well spent! Other than settling into my new role (and city), I attended a South West Screen two-day course on Storytelling Across Platforms at the end of February which gave some fascinating insight into developing and producing multiplatform content (or transmedia content) from a story perspective; so anyone who is interested in discussing a script, particularly about the possibility of multiplatform, please give me a shout.

Otherwise, I’m still working on bits and pieces, so I won’t reinstate my services just yet, but as I said, give me a shout if you want to have a chat – alexandriahorton@gmail.com.

Just a quick one to say that, regretfully, after my last post I have to amend my party line: between the projects currently on my books, and with settling into the Big Smoke, I won’t be taking on any projects for the next month.

The Big Smoke

So I moved to London last weekend; quite literally, just me at the moment – all my things are following when I can go home and pack! It happened so fast it’s only just sinking in, but I’m thrilled that I’ve got a full-time job after freelancing for the last few months. I’m even more thrilled that it’s with an amazing production company who have a long-standing history, classic productions under their belt, and very talented and knowledgeable staff.

This doesn’t mean that Xandria’s Script Reading Service is going anywhere though; so don’t stop sending your scripts! I’m still going to take on projects, but I’m going to schedule them so that I can still give my full attention to them. This may mean fewer projects at one time, but the same quality you should expect for your script. Needless to say, my work and my script projects will remain completely independent of each other and strictly confidential,and I’m still happy to work to your needs, so drop me an email (alexandriahorton@gmail.com) and we can discuss it further.

I’m currently reading the Charlaine Harris True Blood books so took the third one with me to read on the Tube – these books are a read that is definitely easy-on-the-eye; mischievous, cheeky and bordering on the “bodice ripper” (can you think of anything better to get you through your commute?). Unfortunately I devoured it by the Wednesday of my working week, so today I had a chance to pop my head above the parapet. Most people don’t; commuters sleep. They read. They listen to music, and they escape. Without looking too deeply into the potential mire of quiet despair that may be attached to the human condition, I do love the escapism and the worlds that people find in their heads.

I’m definitely in the right job, which is a good thing, so I’ve decided to maintain my 10% off all services into February!

Re-wards

Obviously the Christmas and New Year time isn’t the easiest for people to fork out extra cash, stick to writing deadlines or even get out of our front doors, in some cases. However, one of the nicest things I’ve discovered in the last month of my service is that the people who have taken the plunge and gone with me for a script service have all come back, to enquire about, and even purchase, another.

So, I will say on the record, as I will to my repeat customers in person; just because it’s your script, doesn’t make it any less personal for me when I read it. I genuinely do enjoy helping you get the most out of each story, and seeing redrafts, or other scripts, only gives me a clearer picture of your goal as a writer. That’s very important for both of us. And, obviously, those that are regular customers the service will earn other rewards as well – it’s just good business!

So for those who haven’t gotten in touch yet, I’ll let a certain film say it for me: “I think this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship…”

If you can’t beat ‘em, link ‘em…

For any bloggers and/or writers, or just seasoned web surfers, you’ll know that a lot of script sites exist with anecdotal, educational and often downright funny articles on the art and craft of writing for film/television/radio/microfiction/Twitter.

I hope it won’t disappoint you too much if I admit that I’ve not quite waded through the entirety of it yet myself. There are also sites dedicated just to cataloguing and providing an easily-accessible resource for this information such as my friend Michelle’s Writesofluid resource.

Though it’s not much at the moment, I’ve added a few links to my “Blogs I Like” section. And I do. So check them out. I’ll keep adding to it, and in time I’ll build up my own resource, both writing and link-ing. For now, however, I’ll take advantage of the existing wealth of information on the net, which must be the most insightful grass-roots reference guide I’ve ever seen.

Xandria’s Script Reading Service is about to hit it’s 1000th visitor!

In under two weeks there has been a great response; the site has had several customers who have purchased Script Proofing and Overview Notes services, with further interest in the Short Report from a couple of budding short film makers.
